My Top 5 Mental Tricks to Push Through the Wall

Practical Mindset Tools for Racing and Long Training Sessions

Every endurance athlete knows the wall. It’s that brutal mental and physical barrier that shows up somewhere deep into the race or a long training session—when your legs are screaming, your energy’s fading, and the finish line feels impossibly far away.

Over the years, I’ve developed a few mental tools to help me push through those moments. These aren’t abstract ideas—they’re practical tricks that work when the going gets tough. Here are my top five:

1. The Next Tree Trick

When things get dark, zoom in. I’ll often pick a visual target just up the road—a tree, a streetlight, a shadow line—and tell myself: “Just run to that.” Once I hit it, I choose another. These small, achievable goals help break the race into mentally digestible chunks. One tree at a time can take you surprisingly far.

2. Mantra Lock-In

Mantras are like anchors. They give your mind something simple and empowering to hold onto when everything else feels chaotic. Some of my favorites:
🔹 “Strong and steady.”
🔹 “This is what I trained for.”
🔹 “One more step.”
I’ll repeat them in rhythm with my stride or breath, syncing body and mind into one determined rhythm.

3. Future You Motivation

When I hit the wall, I picture Future Me—the version of myself at the finish line, looking back on this moment with pride. Will I be proud of how I responded? Did I give everything I had? That simple thought reframes the pain as something temporary and meaningful.

4. Mental Rehearsal

Before every long effort—especially a race—I take time to mentally rehearse the tough moments. I visualize what it’ll feel like 3 hours into a run, what thoughts might creep in, and how I’ll respond. This mental preparation builds resilience before I even hit the start line.

5. Gratitude Shift

When I feel myself spiraling, I actively shift into gratitude. I’ll list things I’m thankful for: my legs for carrying me, the air in my lungs, the people cheering on the sidelines, even the opportunity to do something hard. Gratitude turns suffering into something sacred.

Final Thought

Endurance isn’t just about fitness—it’s a battle of mindset. Every time you push through the wall, you build mental calluses that make you stronger, tougher, and more resilient. So the next time it hits, remember: it’s not a sign to stop. It’s a sign you’re exactly where growth begins.
